(Hebrew: אוריאל Uriʾel ርኤል ʿUriʾēl7​ “fire/light of God”), according to the tradition of rabbinic Judaism and in some traditions, such as the Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and Coptic, he is one of the regent princes of the Seraphim and the Cherubim, one of the regent angels of the Sun and also one of the princes of the Divine Presence and the angel of salvation.

He is the name of one of the seven archangels. He is also mentioned in apocryphal and cabalistic texts as Uriel, Nuriel, Uryan, Jeremiel, Vretil, Suriel, Auriel, Puruel, Phanuel, Phanuel or Jehoel. Uriel refers to the angel of light, starlight.

Uriel or Auriel (male) / Urielle or Eurielle (female) is also a name assimilated by Breton Celtic culture, because of Urielle (7th century), sister of the Breton king Judicael, who popularized the name.
