Metatron (Biblical Hebrew: מֶטÖøטְ×Øוֹן‎), also known as Mattatron or Metator, is an angel mentioned in Rabbinic Judaism, appearing three times in the Talmud and in some passages of the Aggadah. He is sometimes identified as an archangel. He is not mentioned in the Torah, Bible, or Quran, so the origin of his figure is a matter of debate. He is usually identified as the most powerful being in the heavenly realm, and is second only to Yahweh.

There are discrepancies regarding Metatron's own nature. In some branches of Judaism, Metatron is the name of a high-ranking archangel. In the Jewish tradition, Merkavah is considered to be Enoch himself ascended to the angelic state, since he was raised to heaven without knowing death according to Genesis, and this ascension is narrated in the Book of Enoch. A third interpretation considers the existence of two Metatrons, because his name has two different spellings: one with six letters (מטט×Øון) and another with seven (מיטט×Øון). According to this consideration, the first is Enoch transformed into an angel, while the second is the primordial Metatron, an emanation of God.
